Places to Skate In Brighton!

1. Hove Beach Park (The Roller Area)

Why it’s perfect for beginners: This is arguably the best place in the UK to learn right now. Unlike most skateparks that are a “free-for-all” of bikes and boards, this has a dedicated 600sqm flat-level roller area.

  • The Safety Factor: It is a protected space away from high-speed BMX riders, meaning you can practice your “bubbles” and “lemons” without looking over your shoulder.
  • The Surface: The concrete is brand new and buttery smooth, which reduces the “foot buzz” (vibration) that can make beginners feel unstable.

3. Black Rock (The New Madeira Drive East)

If you’re looking for the “Holy Grail” of smooth ground, you’ve found it. The far eastern end of Madeira Drive (near the Marina) has recently undergone a massive rejuvenation, resulting in a huge stretch of silk-smooth, high-grade tarmac that feels like skating on butter.

Why it’s a beginner’s dream:

  • The “No-Trip” Zone: For a beginner, cracks and pebbles are the enemy. Because this tarmac is brand new, it’s remarkably consistent. You won’t have to worry about your wheels catching on uneven ground while you’re still finding your “skate legs.”
  • Massive Open Spaces: This area is incredibly wide. Unlike the narrow promenade paths further west, Black Rock gives you the “room to fail.” If you need to bail or take a wide, shaky turn, you’ve got meters of space in every direction.
  • Car-Free Confidence: Most of this section is blocked off to general traffic. This removes the stress of looking over your shoulder for cars, allowing you to focus 100% on your footwork and balance.
  • Perfect for Stopping Practice: Because it is dead flat, it is the best place in Brighton to practice your T-stops and plow stops. You don’t have to fight gravity or hills here; you are in total control of your speed.

Preston Park Velodrome

Why it’s perfect for beginners: This is the oldest cycling track in the country, and its closed-loop design makes it a beginner’s paradise for building stamina.

  • No Obstacles: There are no cars, no dogs on long leads, and no curbs. You can just focus on your stride.
  • Banked Turns: The slight banking on the corners actually helps “tuck” you into the turn, teaching you how to lean into your edges safely at low speeds.
  • The Grass Buffer: The track is surrounded by grass, providing a “soft landing” zone if you feel like you’re losing control and need to bail safely.
